Trump names John Ratcliffe to head CIA and Mike Huckabee as ambassador – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will nominate former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.

He also said he had chosen former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel and his old friend Steven Witkoff as special envoy to the Middle East.

In a series of announcements, Trump also named Bill McGinley, his Cabinet secretary in his first administration, as his White House lawyer.

Trump is rolling out a steady stream of appointees and nominees for his next administration, working so far at a faster pace and without as much drama as in his first transition after his 2016 victory.

Ratcliffe, a former Republican congressman from Texas, served as director of national intelligence during the final year and a half of Trump’s first term, directing the U.S. government’s spy agencies during the coronavirus pandemic. It’s a more traditional pick for the position, requiring Senate confirmation, than some loyalist rumors pushed by some of Trump’s supporters.

Huckabee is a strong supporter of Israel, and his proposed nomination comes as Trump has promised to more closely align American foreign policy with Israel’s interests while waging wars against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Witkoff is a Florida real estate investor who serves as chairman of Trump’s inaugural committee. He also spent time in the New York real estate world, where Trump first made his mark as a public figure.

As intelligence director, Democrats criticized him for declassification in the final days of the 2020 presidential election Russian intelligence alleged damaging information about Democrats during the 2016 race, although it acknowledged it might not be true.

Ratcliffe’s visibility increased when he emerged in 2019 as an ardent supporter of Trump during the first House impeachment trial against him. He was a member of Trump’s impeachment advisory team and vigorously cross-examined witnesses during the impeachment hearings.

After the Democratic-controlled House voted to impeach Trump, Ratcliffe said: “This is the thinnest, fastest, weakest impeachment our country has ever seen.” He also strongly questioned former special counsel Robert Mueller when he testified before the House Judiciary Committee about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“I look forward to John being the first person to serve in our nation’s two highest Intelligence positions,” Trump said in a statement. “He will be a fearless fighter for the constitutional rights of all Americans, while ensuring the highest levels of national security and PEACE THROUGH THE FORTRESS.”

Huckabee has led paid tour group visits to Israel for years, frequently advertising the trips in conservative-leaning media outlets.

“Mike has been a great public servant, governor, and faith leader for many years,” Trump said in a statement. “He loves Israel and the people of Israel, and in the same way, the people of Israel love him. “Mike will work tirelessly to achieve peace in the Middle East!”

David Friedman, who was Trump’s ambassador to Israel in his first term, said he was “excited” by Trump’s selection of Huckabee.

Witkoff is also a golf buddy of the president-elect and was with him when he was the target of a second assassination attempt at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September.

Trump’s transition team did not offer details about the envoy’s role in the Middle East, but Trump, in a statement, said: “Steve will be a relentless voice for PEACE and will make us all proud.”

Witkoff’s selection follows a pattern by Trump of placing people close to him in key roles in the Middle East portfolio. Eight years ago he named his former corporate lawyer Jason Greenbaltt as his special representative for international negotiations and trusted his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as his personal envoy to talks in the region.
