Guitarist of legendary classic rock band says they were ‘bullied’ into releasing latest album

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is unhappy with the way the band’s latest album, “The Endless River,” was promoted.

During a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Gilmour, 78, said the record label “bullied” the band into framing the 2014 album as a direct follow-up to 1994’s “The Division Bell,” even though it was largely made up of outtakes from those previous sessions.

“When we made that album, there was something that Andy Jackson, our engineer, had created called ‘The Big Spliff,’ a collection of all these fragments of songs that were available in bootleg form. “A lot of fans wanted these things we had done at the time and we thought we would give it to them,” he said.

“The Endless River” consisted largely of instrumental and ambient music, except for one song, “Louder Than Words.”

“My mistake, I suppose, was being bullied by the record company into putting it out as a duly paid Pink Floyd record,” he said. “It should have been clear what this was about: it was never intended to be the continuation of The Division Bell. But you know, it’s never too late to get caught in one of these traps again.”

Gilmour also spoke Sony recently bought the band’s back catalog for $400 million, saying that “it’s history, it’s all in the past. “This is for future generations,” he said. “I am an older person. I’ve spent the last 40-odd years trying to fight the good fight against the forces of indolence and greed to do the best you can with our things. And I have given up that fight now.”

The deal was one of the most important in recent years, as Pink Floyd’s catalog is considered extremely valuable, with the albums “Dark Side of the Moon”, “The Wall” and “Wish You Were Here” among the best. . selling albums of all time.

“I have my advance, because, you know, it’s not new money or anything like that. “It’s a down payment on what I would have earned in the next few years anyway,” Gilmour said. “But it’s wonderful to say goodbye to the arguments and fights and idiocy that’s been going on for the last 40 years between these four disparate groups of people and their managers and whatever.”
