‘Combating the dangers of gang harassment’

Sandys Parish Council will be hosting an event on Thursday (November 7) at St James Church Hall to educate parents and community members on how to identify and prevent gang bullying.

A spokesperson said: “In an effort to empower the community and protect our youth, Sandys Parish Council is pleased to present a major event, “Identifying and Tackling the Dangers of Gang Bullying.” This educational session will take place on Thursday 7 November 2024 at 6.30pm at St. James Church Hall, Sandys.

“The presentation, led by expert Teledo Breary, aims to shed light on the tactics used by gangs to recruit youth, equipping parents and guardians with the knowledge to recognize and counteract these harmful influences. This session is open to all community members and has a special focus on empowering parents, guardians, and youth advocates.

Topics to be covered include:

  • “Common Grooming Techniques: Understanding how gangs use seemingly harmless interactions to build trust and manipulate youth.
  • “Warning signs: identification of social and behavioral indicators in youth that may indicate gang involvement.
  • “Preventive Measures: Practical strategies for parents to engage in open, supportive conversations with their children and establish protective boundaries.
  • “Community Resources: Information about support systems available for families facing gang grooming or related issues.

“This event is designed to be informative, practical and supportive. In addition to the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to connect with community resources, fostering a safer and more resilient environment for Sandys Parish residents.

“A light meal will be provided, allowing for a relaxed and communal atmosphere. Award for the school that is part of the Sandys Family of School. Giveaways for parents and attending students.

“Sandys Parish Council encourages all members of the community to attend and come together to protect the future of our youth. “Together, we can take proactive steps to counter gang bullying and support our young people to make positive life decisions.”
