For the second consecutive season, The Green Bay Packers sent a veteran defensive player at the trade deadline. to an AFC team to gain draft capital and clear the salary cap.

This year it was Preston Smith.

Smith’s successful career in Green Bay ended Tuesday when The Packers traded him at the deadline to the Pittsburgh Steelers. for a 2025 seventh-round draft pick.

Smith, a defensive end, has been a key contributor to the packers defense during his tenure and leaves with 44 sacks during his time with the franchise, the sixth most in team history. But his playing time has decreased in 2024 and now the Packers will be younger at the position. Before the Packers signed kicker Brandon McManus last monthSmith was the oldest player on the roster at 31 years old.

Smith’s profession reflects that of when Packers traded Rasul Douglas in 2023 to the Buffalo Bills for a 2024 third-round draft pick.

Packers fans reacted to the trade with gratitude to Smith for his time in Green Bay, while some were also confused about the return.
