City Charter Amendments Could Affect City Council Salaries, Term Limits

SAN ANTONIO – We are looking at big city charter changes on the ballot, including city council salary and term limits, the salary cap and term limits for the city manager.

The charter amendments consist of six proposals that are now in the hands of voters. Darian Trotter is keeping a close eye on things.

The proposals can be confusing even to the most informed voters. That’s why in previous reports we gave viewers a breakdown of each of the six proposals.

Here’s a short snapshot:

Proposition A: Calls for increased funding for the ethics review board and an expansion of the board’s authority.

Proposition B: Would update language in the city charter to a more modern standard, including adding gender-neutral language.

Proposition C: Could eliminate the current term limit and salary cap for the city manager.

Proposition D: Would allow city staff to participate in political activities without retaliation.

Proposition E: Would give significant pay raises to both the city council and mayor.

Proposal F: Would restructure the term limits for both the city council and mayor to two four-year terms instead of the current four two-year terms.

Several of the endorsements have generated much discussion from both supporters and opponents, especially those involving term limits and salary increases.

We’ll have to wait and see what the voters decide.
