Polls open for the 2024 general elections

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Polls are open for the 2024 general election.

Voters in West Virginia and Ohio now head to the polls for Tuesday’s general election.

At the local level, Wood County voters will decide on their respective mayor, city council members and the Wood County Board of Education seat. Voters in Belpre, Ohio will vote on the Belpre City Schools Tax.

West Virginians will also vote statewide for or against Amendment 1, which could potentially ban the practice of physician-assisted suicide, euthanasia and mercy killing.

Across the country, voters will decide on the next president of the United States. Both states (along with the rest of the county) in WTAP’s viewing area also decide who will control Congress.

In the House of Representatives, there are 435 seats representing people from all 50 states. All of those seats are up for election.

House members are elected to two-year terms and Republicans currently control 220 seats. Democrats have 212 seats.

There are three vacant seats in the house ahead of the general election.

Ohio has 15 representatives in the United States House of Representatives. Washington County voters will vote in the race for U.S. Congressional District 6 in Ohio.

West Virginia has two representatives in the United States House of Representatives. Voters in Pleasants and Wood counties are deciding U.S. Congressional District 2 in West Virginia.

In the Senate, there are 100 seats representing people from all 50 states. Only 34 of those seats are up for grabs in the Nov. 5 election.

Senators are elected for 6-year terms.

Democrats currently control the Senate and hold 47 seats. Republicans hold 49 seats.
