Morning update: Could the Patriots sell? There are names to watch here. — 8:15 a.m.

By Christopher Price

While it may be foolish to predict what direction a team might take at the NFL trade deadline, with a 2-7 record and the Insider clue on the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draftIt wouldn’t be surprising if the Patriots were sellers as the Tuesday afternoon deadline approaches.

Over the past week, head coach Jerod Mayo has been reluctant to discuss hypothetical transactions involving his team, saying many of the conversations have been “nonsense” and “frustrating” to broach.

“To me, it’s silly,” Mayo told Scott Zolak during a pregame radio interview with 98.5 The Sports Hub on Sunday. “A lot of that stuff is nonsense. Sometimes it’s frustrating because you always want to be very transparent with the player and let them know; They listen to it.

“If a report comes out that is absolutely 100 percent false and you have to discuss it with that person, it just takes more time and more space.”

Given the way things played out throughout the season, it was notable that wide receiver KJ Osborn was noticeably healthy against the Titans. And although fellow catcher Tyquan Thornton was on the injury report in the days leading up to last weekend’s game, the decision to leave him inactive could be a sign that the catcher is on the trade market.

On Monday, Mayo said Making Osborn a healthy scratch against Tennessee was a personal decision, saying the coaching staff’s job was to “put in the players that we think are going to help us win that game.” The head coach praised Osborn for his “energy” on the sideline during Sunday’s game, particularly in regards to his reaction after a DeMario Douglas catch in the third quarter.

“For a guy like that, it’s all about the team,” Mayo said of Osborn, who has seven catches for 57 yards in six games. “It’s not about him as an individual. And we need more people like him.”

It will be a challenge to figure out how general manager Eliot Wolf might negotiate his first trade deadline at the helm of the Patriots, but it’s worth noting that he hasn’t had any qualms about trading potentially impactful defensive players. In August, he Traded pass rusher Matthew Judon to Atlanta for third-round pick in 2025. And late last month, New England traded outside linebacker Joshua Uche, send him to Kansas City for a sixth-round pick in 2026.

Moving forward, other defensive veterans whose names have been linked to a potential trade include veteran cornerback Jonathan Jones and safety Kyle Dugger.

Last month, Jones was asked about his thinking as the trade deadline approached. One of the last ties to the Patriots’ victory in Super Bowl LIII, he was philosophical about what the future would hold.

“Control what you can control” he said. “I just go to work every day, I try to do the same thing, the same thing I’ve always done. Whatever happens, happens. “I love going to work and playing football.”

“The guys understand professional football and they understand this time of year,” Mayo said in late October. “From our perspective as an organization, we are always trying to improve, whether it is adding players or adding by subtracting. “We have to look at both the short and long term.”

How might the Patriots approach Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline? – 3:15 p.m.

By Nicole Yang

The Patriots have already made one move ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, sending linebacker Joshua Uche to Kansas City, so what else could be in the future?

Coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday he’s not sure how active the Patriots will be. However, if they were interested in selling, there are a handful of players who could attract interest. Names to watch are cornerback Jonathan Jones, nose tackle Davon Godchaux and wide receivers KJ Osborn and Kendrick Bourne.

“The guys understand professional football and they understand this time of year,” Mayo said. “From our perspective as an organization, we are always trying to improve, whether it is adding players or adding by subtracting. “We have to look at both the short and long term.”

Saints fire head coach Dennis Allen – 3:00 p.m.

The 2-7 Saints made a rare in-season firing of a head coach on Monday. passing by dennis allen after the team suffered a seventh consecutive loss on Sunday.

New Orleans was one of the surprises of the early season, starting 2-0 with blowout wins over the Panthers (47-10) and Cowboys (44-19). The Saints have been imploding ever since, going winless and scoring just 16.6 points per game after putting up 91 points in their first two games.

The final straw was a Week 9 loss to the Panthers, as Allen became the first head coach fired by the Saints since the Benson family purchased the team in 1985.

Allen replaced Sean Payton in 2022 and compiled an 18-25 record in three and a half seasons.

Cardinals add Broncos linebacker – 2:30 p.m.

The Cardinals agreed to acquire linebacker Baron Browning from the Broncos, ramping up the team’s pressure ahead of the trade deadline.

The Cardinals will send a 2025 sixth-round draft pick to the Broncos. The agreement is pending a physical examination.

Browning, 25, is in his fourth season in the NFL after being selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Ohio State. He has 9½ career sacks, although he hasn’t had any this season. The Cardinals have other key players from Ohio State, including left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Browning has played only five games this year and missed time due to a foot injury.

The Cardinals (5-4) are on a three-game winning streak, which has vaulted them into first place in the NFC West. Arizona’s pass rush has been a sore point for much of the season, although the defense did manage six sacks in Sunday’s 29-9 win over the Bears.
