NFL Fans Couldn’t Believe Eagles-Jaguars Referees Didn’t Overturn Saquon Barkley’s Fumble

The Jacksonville Jaguars looked down against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but in a shocking turn of events they quickly found themselves within one score.

In what was a controversial decision by the officiating crew, the officials opted not to overturn a Saquon Barkley fumble that the Jaguars defense picked up and brought back for a touchdown.

Barkley appeared to be tackled by a defender, causing him to fall to the ground where he then lost the ball. The Eagles and Barkley seemed to think the play was over, but Jacksonville’s defense was playing until the whistle blew, when Travon Walker carried the live ball into the end zone for six points.

On review, even though Jaguars linebacker Ventrell Miller grabbed Barkley’s ankle, officials determined he did not go down through contact and opted to uphold the fumble call.

Having trailed 22–8, the defensive touchdown instantly brought the Jaguars back to life. Meanwhile, the Eagles were left scratching their heads after the referees’ decision.

CBS NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore offered his opinion on the situation and admitted he was surprised by the referees’ decision.

Like Philadelphia’s offense, NFL fans were also confused about how Barkley was not considered down for contact, leading to their concerns with the referees.
