Plan for Corby housing on former Co-op site rejected

Plans to convert a former supermarket into a 150-home development have been rejected.

At a meeting Wednesday, a planning committee in North Northamptonshire Council rejected the plans to build the development on the former Co-op site on Alexandra Road, Corby.

Developer Glenrowan Homes had pitched the project as a “high quality multi-storey building”.

Planning officers recommended that the proposals be approved, but Neighbors expressed concern on parking, noise and pressure on local services.

The plan attracted 43 letters of objection, including one from Corby Labor MP Lee Barron.

He Local Democracy Reporting Service He said one resident told the committee: “We all need enough space to live and protect our overall health and well-being.

“In established inner cities, where space is very limited, it might be necessary to include high-rise complexes like this, but in Corby this is not the case.”

Labor councilor Alison Dalziel, who sat on the committee, said the site needed regeneration because it was an “absolute blip”.

But he struggled to name any other development in Corby that was six storeys high, saying: “To have something as imposing and as dense as it looks, I don’t think it’s the right thing to do for what is actually quite a small building.” land.”

And he added: “For me, thinking that between 350 and 400 people live on that land does not make sense.”

Patrick Boyle, director of Glenrowan Homes, said: “Corby needs housing.

“We have people in our office commuting from Derby because they can’t find rented accommodation.

“We share the council’s view that a landmark building should be built on that site.”

As part of its denial, the committee cited overdevelopment, high density and the likely impact on neighboring residents.
