Crews continue to search for bodies in stranded cars and buildings following flash floods in Spain.

The floods have claimed at least 158 ​​lives, with 155 confirmed deaths in the eastern region of Valencia alone.

But there are still an unknown number of people missing and more victims may be found.

“Unfortunately there are people dead inside some vehicles,” said Spanish Transport Minister Óscar Puente.

Although the most affected areas were those near the city of Valencia, the storms also unleashed their fury in large areas of the southern and eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

Two deaths were confirmed in the neighboring region of Castilla La Mancha and one in southern Andalusia.

Spain has suffered a drought for almost two years, meaning that when the flood occurred, the ground was so hard that it could not absorb the rain, causing flash floods.

The violent weather phenomenon surprised regional government officials.

And Spain’s national weather service said more rain fell in eight hours in the Valencian city of Chiva than in the previous 20 months.
