Famous 123-year-old viaduct gets £3.4m facelift | United Kingdom | News

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is located on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland, and was opened in 1901 after four years of construction.

Spanning 1,000 feet and 21 arches, it is the longest solid concrete railway bridge in Scotland and carries the daily ScotRail service and Jacobite Steam Train services from Fort William to Mallaig.

Network Rail is currently working on the viaduct, costing £3.4 million to improve its structure and the soil beneath the track, as well as the stones in the track bed.

Laura Craig, project director at Network Rail, said earlier this year: “The viaduct is an iconic landmark that attracts visitors from around the world, so we have worked hard to develop a solution that will help preserve the structure, respect its historical importance while minimizing the visual impact of our work.”

He also shared that the work would not change the appearance of the beloved structure that appeared in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

She said: “Years of planning have gone into this project. The work will not have a massive visual impact on the appearance of the viaduct, and that is very deliberate as it is grade A listed.”

The railway company is working with local owner Highland Council to ensure the work is carried out as sensitively as possible.

To ensure minimal disruption, the team is using a rope access system, meaning they can work on the viaduct while remaining within sight of visitors.

Highland Council economic and infrastructure chair Ken Gowans said: “The scenic train journey has become a very popular route between Fort William and Mallaig.

“It is very popular with Harry Potter fans and attracts visitors from all over the world.

“In addition, it also provides a valuable service to those who live and work in the communities it passes through, so it is essential that repairs and works are carried out to safeguard the future of the route.”
