Body of missing boater recovered in Choctawhatchee Bay

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. — Search crews located the body of a missing boater after he was seen jumping into Choctawhatchee Bay, according to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says a call about the missing boater was received before 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The caller reported that a man had jumped from a boat under the bridge at Pilcher Park into Choctawhatchee Bay.

According to the caller, the boater sped under the bridge several times before plunging into the water, leaving the boat adrift.

The ship was insured. However, no one was found on board.

The South Walton Fire District deployed several personnel, a jet ski and a drone to assist in the search. WCSO sent its dive equipment along with assets from Florida Fish and Wildlife. With their help they were able to recover the body of the navigator.

The family was notified.

“To protect their privacy while they grieve, we will not release any additional information,” WCSO says.

The FWC will conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident.
