Cobb County elections: Officials take stock of what went right and future improvements

Tuesday was the deadline for all Georgia counties to certify election results. At an election board meeting where Cobb County certified its election results, board members discussed some of the issues that arose.

There were some problems with the equipment, including scanner jams and election pads not syncing. There were also some discrepancies along the way, including a couple of ballots that were scanned twice.

There was also one voter who voted twice. Cobb Elections Director Tate Fall says it was a combination of election boards not synchronizing and an elderly man who may have been confused.

“He voted in our regular voting room, then left, and 10 minutes later he registered and voted in our senior and disabled room,” Fall said.

More than 406,000 voters in Cobb County cast ballots in this election. That’s more than 78% of registered voters.

Fall says the biggest problem is the struggle to receive 3,400 absentee ballots requested at the last minute by mail. It was difficult, but with the help of other Cobb County employees, poll workers and volunteers, along with UPS and the US Postal Service, they managed to deliver the ballots overnight.

“They opened at 3 a.m. at the main post office and 4 a.m. at the Gresham Road post office. They were able to scan them and process them before opening during their normal business hours,” Fall said.

About a third of those absentee ballots were returned on Election Day.

“The Marietta postmaster was delivering the last tray of ballots at 6:55 p.m. on Election Day,” Fall said.

Fall says there will now be some changes to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.

“We no longer know how we can fix the current system, and we’re going to tear it down to the ground and completely rebuild it,” Fall said.
