JD Vance tells Flint crowd that Trump will make the American dream affordable

Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance made one final speech to Genesee County voters on Monday, telling them that he and his running mate, former President Donald Trump, will fix the economy that has been scarred by inflation.

He said an increasing number of Americans are becoming delinquent on their credit card and auto loan debt.

“This election is fundamentally about whether the American dream will be affordable for our fellow citizens and I believe we have to do better,” Vance said. “There are so many people who are struggling.”

The Ohio senator arrived with his wife, Usha, and spoke for about 35 minutes to a crowd of about 800 people at the FIM Capitol Theater in downtown Flint. He said it was a great place for his final campaign visit to Michigan and promised to return as vice president.

Vance reiterated the campaign’s call for tariffs, saying some Chinese companies use slave labor and should not be able to sell their products in the United States without paying a price. He also blamed Democratic vice president candidate Kamala Harris for a porous southern border that allows fentanyl to flow into places like Michigan.

“We are going to wage war against the Mexican drug cartels and prevent this poison from reaching Michigan communities,” Vance said.

He also blamed Harris and President Joe Biden for an influx of migrants into the United States that he said is overwhelming schools and hospital emergency rooms and threatening to bankrupt local communities. He said Americans are the most generous and compassionate people in the world, but they have limits.

“The American president’s compassion belongs to American citizens, to the people who have a legal right to be here, not to the people who should not be here in the first place,” he said.

Vance spoke on a stage with a banner behind him that read “jobs, jobs, jobs.” Attendees were given red and blue signs that read “Trump will fix it.” Preparation speakers included Republican candidates for the U.S. House and Senate.

Local Democratic leaders, including outgoing U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint, and Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, held a news conference to counter Vance’s speech. Kildee said Trump is ending his campaign with a “poisonous and terrifying approach” to politics.

“There is a huge difference between what a Kamala Harris presidency will mean (hope, optimism, rolling up your sleeves and doing the work of the American people) and what a Donald Trump presidency will look like: anger, venom, a dark, dystopian vision of what America should be,” Kildee said in a statement.

Harold Lawrence, 46, of Flint, works in HVAC systems and is a poker fan. He attended the rally and said he is looking forward to casting his third vote for Trump on Tuesday. He said his grandfather was a World War II veteran and a lifelong Democrat, but he feels the party has changed since those days.

“If I were alive today, I think I would vote for the conservative Trump,” he said. “I totally agree with Trump. I would bet the entire ranch on Trump.”

Donna Smith, 64, is a retired nurse who lives in Linden. She saw Trump when he visited Flint in September, but she was eager to see Vance, hoping he would talk about the economy.

“Just the peace of mind of our safety and the economy, you know, of groceries and stuff,” he said. “Everything is getting so expensive that you can’t do it right now.”

Vance closed by urging everyone who has not yet voted to do so.

“We have to go out tomorrow and take everyone we know,” Vance said.

Trump and Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz were scheduled to speak in Michigan later Tuesday.
