Firefighter seriously injured after falling 40 feet out of window during five-alarm fire in Manhattan

A firefighter was seriously injured after falling 40 feet from a window while battling a five-alarm fire at a Manhattan apartment building on Friday, according to the FDNY.

The smoke-eater was backing down the stairs of a six-story building that caught fire in Hamilton Heights when he accidentally fell out of a fifth-floor window and down a shaft behind the building, officials and sources said.

Sources told The Post that the mishap occurred while the firefighter was removing a hose.

“He received immediate medical attention downhole from on-scene FDNY medics and trauma paramedics,” FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said at a news conference Friday. “Our rescue medics and rescue firefighters got to him very quickly.”

“We were blessed today because we had the fire department medic on scene as well as the elite rescue medics that were on scene,” EMS Chief Michael Fields said at the news conference.

The firefighter is in serious but stable condition at Harlem Hospital, according to the FDNY.

The firefighter had been battling a fire that broke out on the second floor of an apartment building on West 145th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue shortly after 2:40 p.m., authorities said.

FDNY Fire Operations Chief Kevin Woods said strong winds blowing through the front windows fueled the fire as flames spread to the sixth floor.

More than 200 firefighters responded to the huge fire.

According to the FDNY, about 10 apartments were affected, displacing up to 40 residents.
