1 dead, 9 injured after gunfire erupts near Tennessee State University: police

One person is dead and nine others were shot and injured after gunfire broke out during homecoming celebrations for Tennessee State University, Nashville Police Department officials said.

Five people were transported by ambulance to local hospitals. Five others were transported by private vehicle, Metro Nashville Police Officer Brooke Reese said. At least one of the victims is a child, authorities said.

Officials believe some of the injured and hospitalized individuals were involved and suspected of being involved in the gunfire, Reese said.

Fire and police officials were on hand earlier today to participate in the homecoming parade, authorities said. Some personnel were already on scene when gunfire broke out and used their seat belts to apply tourniquets to gunshot victims, Nashville Fire Department PIO Kendra Loney said.

Most of the people celebrating their homecoming went to the Tennessee State University football game, held at Nissan Stadium, said Anthony McClain, commander of the Nashville North Precinct. During the day a large group of people gathered for the parade.

When the gunfire started during the event about two hours ago, “a few people ruined it for everyone,” McClain said.
