A man was hospitalized with serious injuries Monday after being hit by a pickup truck on Route 1 in downtown Hampton, according to police.

According to police, Route 1 (Lafayette Road), between Swain Court and the High Street traffic light, was closed until 8 pm due to the accident.

Reno said evidence at the scene, along with witness statements, led investigators to determine that the pedestrian had exited Greg’s on the east side of Lafayette Road and began crossing to the west side of the street. The pickup truck was traveling north on Lafayette Road in the proper lane.

Investigators, he said, determined that the pedestrian crossed the road approximately 10 to 15 feet south of a marked crosswalk after passing vehicles that were parked on the east side of the road.

“The pickup truck struck the pedestrian in this area of the travel lane,” Reno said. “The pickup truck stopped just south of the marked crosswalk while the pedestrian was pushed just north of the crosswalk. After reviewing all necessary evidence, it was determined that no charges would be filed against the operator at this time.”

Reno said the identity of the parties involved is being withheld at this time.

The Hampton Police Department reminds pedestrians of the importance of using marked crosswalks to improve safer passage when crossing the street.

“We also remind drivers to do their part by stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk and to be aware of pedestrian traffic in congested areas,” he said.

The Hampton Police Department was assisted by Hampton Fire & Rescue and the New Hampshire State Police.
