Mercer County Salvation Army Receives Funding to Keep Homeless Out of the Cold

MERCER COUNTY, WV (WVVA) – The Salvation Army of Mercer County will once again offer hotel rooms to those who need them during the cold temperatures.

For the second year in a row, the Mercer County Commission is helping by giving the Salvation Army $5,000 to use to provide hotel rooms to people who have nowhere else to stay on cold nights. Last year, the commission donated $7,500 to the nonprofit for the cause.

Some of that money still remains and will be available for hotel rooms. Rooms will be provided for people if thermal temperatures reach single digits.

Anyone needing a hotel room during cold nights should stop by the Salvation Army building located at 300 Princeton Avenue in Princeton.

“We are getting ahead of schedule so that when the first cold weather arrives we will already have an established supply. We also continue to work toward a permanent, long-term solution in hopes of being able to offer a subsequent solution in the future,” said Sgt. Melisa Blanca.

White says the ultimate goal is to offer a permanent solution which would be to offer a warming station at the Salvation Army building in Princeton. White says they need volunteers to make this happen.

Anyone interested in volunteering in any capacity can call the Salvation Army of Mercer County at 304-425-2971.
