A weeklong closure of Portage Avenue East will begin Tuesday to allow for pre-construction work on traffic signals at Portage and Main.

According to the City of Winnipeg, the closure will allow for underground work to prepare for the demolition of concrete barriers and other construction.

Access to the Fairmont Hotel and surrounding lots will be maintained via Lombard Street. A portion of the road will reopen Saturday for the Santa Claus Parade.

Earlier this year, CTV News Winnipeg reported that city council voted to reopen Portage and Main.

Major construction at the intersection begins this month and work is expected to be completed by the end of June.
