Once Rep. Elise Stefanik, R.N.Y., vacates her seat for become a us ambassador According to the United Nations, New York’s Democratic governor, Kathy Hochul, has 10 days to set the date for a special election to replace her in the House.

The special election is due to be held within 70 to 80 days, and several potential contenders are reportedly already being considered to claim New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Stefanik won a sixth term to represent the district covering New York’s northern county, but President-elect Donald Trump tapped her this week to serve as the U.N. embassy in his new Cabinet.

Republican names being floated include state Sen. Dan Stec, who represents parts of St. Lawrence County and other eastern regions of the state; state Assemblymen Robert Smullen and Christopher Tague; and Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin, according to WWNY. Possible Democratic candidates include Assemblyman Billy Jones, whose state district is just east of St. Lawrence County, as well as Stefanik’s failed rivals in the past, such as Matt Castelli and Paula Collins.

Stefanik won 62.27% of the vote last week against Collins, who got just 37.73%, according to The Associated Press.

Stefanik has built a national profile as a steadfast Trump ally and as a trenchant Republican voice. First elected to Congress in 2014, at age 30, she finally shed her initial reputation as a moderate Republican and rose to become the highest-ranking woman in House Republican leadership. Stefanik represents a largely rural district in upstate New York that includes some of the least populated parts of the state.

New York Democrats ousted three first-term Republican incumbents in the U.S. House of Representatives last Tuesday, as Empire State voters were expected to play a huge role in helping determine control of the Chamber.

Stefanik was selected by her House Republican colleagues as chair of the House Republican Conference in 2021, when former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney was removed from the position after publicly criticizing Trump after the 2020 election.

There will also be a separate contest to replace Stefanik as chairman of the House Republican Conference.

Stefanik’s questioning of college presidents about anti-Semitism on their campuses in the wake of the October 7 terrorist attacks helped cause two of those presidents to resign, further raising their national profile. If confirmed, he would represent American interests at the UN as Trump vows to end Russia’s war against Ukraine that began in 2022. He has also called for peace as the conflict between Israel and terrorist groups Hamas and Hezbollah continues. backed by Iran.

STEFANIK TO MEET ISRAELI PRESIDENT AFTER TRUMP NAMED HIS NEXT UN AMBASSADOR

Stefanik, who served as ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, the House Intelligence Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee, issued a statement Monday afternoon following her nomination to Trump’s cabinet.

During a conversation with Trump, Stefanik said he shared “how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate.”

“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that better days are ahead, both at home and abroad,” he said. “America remains the beacon of the world, but we expect and must demand that our friends and allies be strong partners in the peace we seek. The work ahead is immense as we watch anti-Semitism skyrocket alongside four years of catastrophically weak American leadership. “That significantly weakened our national security and diminished our standing in the eyes of allies and adversaries alike.”

The congresswoman said she is ready to advance Trump’s “restoring America First peace through strong leadership on the world stage on day one at the United Nations” and thanked her “dear constituents in the district 21 Congress in New York for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to work very hard to serve you and give you a voice at the highest levels of Congress.”
