The car, which was traveling from Dibrugarh to Tinsukia, plunged into an under-construction culvert.

Four people, including a five-year-old boy, were killed and two seriously injured when a car fell from an under-construction culvert in Tinsukia, Assam, on Tuesday.

Six members of a family were traveling from Bihar to Tinsukia to attend a wedding when the accident occurred.

“The accident occurred on the Dihingia Gaon bypass along the Tinsukia-Dibrugarh route around 4am. The car, which was traveling from Dibrugarh to Tinsukia, suddenly veered off the road and plunged into a culvert in construction,” a police officer said.

According to police, two family members were seriously injured and were rushed to Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh for treatment.

“Six passengers were there in the Swift Dzire vehicle, including a five-year-old child. Five victims are estimated to be between 40 and 45 years of age. We have initiated investigation,” police said.

The dead have been identified as Mohan Shah, Rajesh Gupta, Montu Shah and the boy Arthav Gupta.

Locals launched a rescue operation and helped the injured reach the hospital.

A police officer told news agency PTI that the incident probably took place due to poor road visibility due to dense fog and lack of proper signage. Local residents have expressed concern about the incomplete state of the bypass, particularly the unfinished culvert.
