Why Kevin Costner is in no ‘hurry’ to watch his final episode of ‘Yellowstone’

Kevin Costner will not see his final episode of “Yellowstone” soon after his character was ended the western series.

The actor opened up about the death of his character John Dutton in Sunday’s Season 5B premiere while chatting on SiriusXM on Monday. “The Michael Smerconish Program”.

“I didn’t see it,” he admitted. “I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush to see it.”

Host Michael Smerconish told Costner, 69, that his character was “not the suicidal type of person,” to which the “Dances With Wolves” star responded, “Well, they’re pretty smart people.”

“Maybe it’s a red herring. Who knows? They are very good. And they will realize that.”

Dutton’s death was initially thought to be a suicide, however the episode went back six weeks to reveal that he was murdered by a hitman orchestrated by his son Jamie Dutton’s girlfriend, Sarah Atwood.

The “Bodyguard” star explained to Smerconish that he didn’t know the second part of the season would air last night, as he hasn’t followed production on the show since it was revealed he wouldn’t be returning.

“That’s a swear-to-God moment,” he continued. “I mean, I’ve been seeing ads with my face all over them and I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m not in that one.’”

Costner doubled down on rumors that he left the show, saying, “I didn’t leave. “I didn’t leave the program.”

He explained that the problem had its roots in scheduling and contract issues, as he was also working on the four-part series “Horizon: An American Saga.”

“There were gaps,” Costner shared. “There were contractual things that would allow us to do both, but since both were contractual, we had to leave room for the other.

“There was space, but they found it difficult to keep to their schedule. It seemed like it was too difficult for them to do.”

Although Costner’s character was found dead from a gunshot wound at the beginning of Sunday night’s episode, a double was used to play the Oscar winner and his face was hidden.

The outlet reported that the two had trouble agreeing on a filming schedule, and Costner reportedly wanted to film the second round of episodes in a week.

A representative for Paramount, however, denied the rumors at the time. telling the post “Costner (was) a big part of ‘Yellowstone.’”

Costner confirmed the news. via Instagram in June, saying the decision was made after a “long year and a half” of work on his 2024 western drama, “Horizon.”

At that time, he was also going through a highly publicized divorce with his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner, whom he married in 2004.
