Mary Schlais’ Family, Genetic Scientists Speak After Arrest in Dunn County Cold Case

Authorities will hold a news conference in Dunn County on Monday afternoon, after holding one last week in connection with an arrest made in a decades-old cold case.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office announced that members of Ramapo College, as well as at least one member of the family of Mary Schlais, who was found dead on February 16, 1974 in Spring Brook Township, will be at the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office press conference. Monday.

When he died, Schlais was hitchhiking from Minneapolis to Chicago to attend an art exhibition.

Investigators in the case worked with a team of genetic genealogists at Ramapo College to identify Jon Miller of Owatonna, now 84, as a suspect. He was arrested last Thursday.

Dunn County Circuit Court charging documents indicated the DNA came from an orange and black cap found near Schlais’ body in 1974. The document states Miller initially denied knowledge of the homicide. However, when presented with DNA evidence, he allegedly admitted to picking up Schlais.

According to the document, Miller told investigators that he had requested sexual contact from Schlais, which was denied. Miller said he then grabbed a knife he kept on the passenger seat visor as Schlais leaned forward and stabbed her until she died, according to the complaint.

He then reportedly attempted to hide her body in a snowbank, but became scared when he saw another vehicle drive past him and left the area.

The complaint says Miller admitted the hat was his and that he must have lost it during the homicide.
