MPUMALANGA – A head-on collision on the R40 has left one dead and nine others seriously injured.

He The accident took place on the R40. near Church Unlimited in Mbombela and forced a partial closure of the road for a time.

Following the incident, one lane towards Mbombela was closed and a stop and go system was installed to keep traffic flowing.

Crash involved three vehicles

Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, who attended the scene, said they received a call and discovered that an LDV had collided head-on with a VW.

Another vehicle then crashed into the rear of the VW.

“The driver of the Polo was pronounced dead at the scene,” Jeffrey confirmed.

Baby among the wounded

Nine other people also suffered serious injuries in the accident. One of the injured was a six-month-old baby.

“The other patients were transported to Rob Ferreira Hospital and Mediclinic Nelspruit in different emergency vehicles for further medical care,” Jeffrey said.

“At the moment the cause of the accident is unknown,” he added.

The road has since been cleared and traffic is flowing smoothly again.

Four dead in an accident in September

The stretch of road is no stranger to fatal accidents.

In September 2024, four people were killed when a truck crashed into a off-road. One of the victims was a small child.

All of the victims suffered burns beyond recognition after the vehicles caught fire.
