“On behalf of the Council and the community, I would like to express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life,” he said in a statement sent to the BBC.

“We are working to support police as they investigate the circumstances surrounding this.”

The incident is not believed to be suspicious but inquiries are underway to establish the circumstances, according to the Metropolitan Police.

“Investigations into the circumstances, including who is responsible for the land where the tree was located, remain ongoing,” police said.

They added that a report will be prepared for the coroner in due course.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) said they attended the scene, along with paramedics from London Ambulance Service and a team of firefighters from Surrey Fire and Rescue.

“Despite the efforts of emergency service personnel present, the child was pronounced dead at the scene,” LFB Deputy Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said.

“The thoughts of our crews and staff across the Brigade are with the child’s family at this difficult time.”
