“Socktober” donation drive comes to an end in Bennington County

BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Bennington County wrapped up its annual “Socktober” donation drive, bringing in some big loot to help those less fortunate.

Organizers say the campaign’s fourth year was one of its biggest, receiving more than 3,000 pairs of new socks, hundreds of hats, gloves and other winter clothing.

All items were donated to Bennington County homeless and outreach programs.

Kelly Carrol said a big push came from local police departments and elementary school students. He said something small, like having clean socks, can have a huge impact.

“There are a lot of things that a lot of us take for granted,” Carrol said. “Socks are one of those things if you think about some homeless people, when it rains, they walk through a puddle, there’s snow or something and their feet get wet, they stay wet and they don’t have a chance to get out and wear something else, to that the little things we take for granted can be big.”

She says the total number of socks they have collected over four years is just under 9,000.
