Man dies after interaction with police at Auckland City Mission site in central Auckland: Police begin investigation, IPCA notified

Police are investigating the death of a man following an interaction with police at an Auckland City Mission site.

Acting Superintendent Sunny Patel told Herald Investigations are underway after the man fell and hit his head following his interaction with police on November 4.

Jacqui Dillon, from the Auckland City Mission, confirmed to the Herald The man who died was known to them and used their services.

The man was at an Auckland City Mission food distribution and support center on Boston Rd, Grafton, before the incident, Dillon said.

Police also confirmed that the incident occurred after they were called to a commercial property on Boston Rd.

However, Dillon said the mission had no further details about the incident.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified. Police also launched a critical incident investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

He Herald An anonymous source has also said that the man who died was homeless.

Patel said police were called to a commercial property in Boston Rd, Grafton after a report that a man had become “agitated towards management staff and paramedics”.

“Police officers arrived and ordered the man to leave,” Patel said.

“Police are still working to determine exactly what happened. However, following this, the man fell and suffered a serious head injury.”

The man was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery, Patel said.

The man has since died in hospital.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the man’s family and friends at this time, and we are providing support to the man’s family,” Patel said.
