Trump wins the latest: the final state delivers the election result; president-elect “must still sign” the ethical commitment necessary for the transition | US News

Lake Worth Beach in Florida is 1,000 miles from Washington DC, but it feels like a million.

The sea is turquoise blue, the breeze stirs the waves and dozens of people sunbathe.

There is a smell of coconut in the beach bars, all full on a warm Saturday morning.

The US electoral earthquake seems far from their minds, but they are more than happy to talk politics.

“Trump baby,” “Trump, of course,” “Trump all day,” is the most common response when asked.

This is not surprising when the president-elect’s adopted home, Mar-a-Lago, is just around the corner.

They’re not naïve about how they perceive it, but the word we heard a lot was “but.”

“He’s a jerk, I get it,” one local resident told us, “but his policies are much better.”

“It’s a loose cannon,” said another sun worshiper, “but people like wild cards, world leaders don’t know what they’ll do next.”

“People said he would be a dictator, that he would send Hillary Clinton to jail, but he didn’t,” added a woman sitting nearby.

The Sunshine State has turned a deep shade of red: Trump’s victory here has increased 12% since 2016.

In these golden sands there is talk of a “Florida wave,” a political wave moving toward Washington.

Floridians shaped Donald Trump’s election campaign and are likely to shape his administration as well.

But even here, at the center of his political orbit, there are fears about what the next four years will bring.

When I asked two middle-aged women what worried them most, they responded in unison: “women’s rights.”

In beach bistros they don’t make small portions, each meal served is a mountain.

Your neighbor, the 47th president of the United States, has a mountain of expectations on his shoulders.

I wish I had a dollar for everyone in this Trump town who told me he would “make America great again.”

Democrats talked a lot about “the soul of America,” but they don’t seem to know what it is.

Perhaps it is the free spirit found on this coast, far removed from the halls of power in Washington.
