Ohio AMBER Alert Canceled After Girl Found Safe and Stepfather Charged

A stepfather faces a kidnapping charge after allegedly trying to take a 13-year-old girl to another state.

The incident took place on South Huron Avenue in Columbus. Police issued an AMBER Alert after the girl did not return from school.

Charging documents for Shane Smith, 48, said the girl’s father reported that cameras showed the girl leaving the residence shortly after 5 a.m. His school bus was supposed to arrive around 6 am. Her father contacted her school, who said she would not arrive.

Detectives wrote in charging documents that another student told the school counselor that the girl’s stepfather, Smith, was going to pick her up and take her to another state.

Smith now faces a kidnapping charge. More charges could be added later.

He also faces a felony assault case from October 2023 and another case from February 2024 for drug possession in Clark County.

Columbus police said the girl was found unharmed. They did not say whether Smith was detained.

The suspect vehicle was found in Clark County. The sheriff’s office said a news release with information will be sent out.
