The first half of the historic match: the milestone of the 1,000th match Indian Super League (ISL) provided an exciting exchange of play and defensive maneuvers as both teams looked for an early lead, although both goals came in the second half.

The action began with a long-range shot from Yoell van Nieff in the 19th minute. Seeing an opportunity from distance, Nieff unleashed a powerful shot that tested Chennaiyin FC goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz. Despite the ambitious attempt, he narrowly missed, prompting a collective gasp from the crowd.

Van Nieff’s early goal signaled Mumbai City FC’s intention to make a good impression from distance as the Chennaiyin FC defense struggled to hold their ground.

Just a minute later, Tiri increased the intensity. A well-placed corner allowed the Spanish defender to overtake the Chennaiyin FC defenders and send a powerful header towards the goal. The near miss demonstrated Mumbai City FC’s strength at set pieces and hinted at the pressure they intended to put on the hosts.

Mumbai City FC soon mounted another attack, with Nikolaos Karelis finding a gap inside the box in the 30th minute. Moving quickly to capitalize on a loose ball, Karelis fired a shot that disturbed the Chennaiyin FC defence. Although it lacked precision to find the back of the net, the attempt underlined Mumbai City FC’s determination to break through Chennaiyin’s defensive lines.

As the match entered the second half, Chennaiyin FC broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with a well-taken goal. Following a set piece, Connor Shields delivered a precise cross into the box, where Ryan Edwards beat the Mumbai City FC defenders to connect with a powerful header.

His shot was perfectly placed, found the bottom right corner and left Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa with no chance. This goal put Chennaiyin FC ahead 1-0, sending the home fans into a frenzy and shifting the momentum in favor of the hosts.

Responding to Chennaiyin FC’s lead, Mumbai City FC found the equalizer just three minutes later in the 63rd minute.
