Current set for NWSL quarterfinals on Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Thousands of fans will fill CPKC Stadium Saturday morning as the Kansas City Stream makes even more history.

The club will host the North Carolina Courage in the NWSL quarterfinals. The game marks the first playoff game in the first stadium built for a professional women’s sports team in the world.

“The fact that we now have this facility, this stadium and walk on this field is, I mean, electric,” said head coach and athletic director Vlatko Andonovski. “It’s noisy. We will play a soccer game there. “It’s just crazy.”

The Current is on a nine-game unbeaten streak as of Saturday. Their last loss was against the Courage on September 1.

“We need to win this game,” said goalkeeper Almuth Schult. “We faced a really good opponent who already beat us in September. This bothers us because we don’t like to lose. “We love playing in front of our fans and we hope to win the next game.”

The NWSL’s leading scorer, current forward Temwa Chawinga, remains questionable to take the field.

He missed the team’s final regular season game with a knee injury.

“Temwa was actually able to train today, which is very positive for us,” Andonovski said. “At the end of the day, we should know if and to what extent the part of her leg that was hurting is going to burst, and if that will free her for tomorrow’s game.”

Saturday’s game starts at 11:00 am on KCTV5.
