UW loses second volleyball match against team with transgender player

The University of Wyoming women’s volleyball team lost its upcoming match Thursday against San Jose State University, the school’s athletics department announced Friday.

It’s the second time UW has lost a SJSU game since California forward Blaire Fleming made headlines in September over reports of being transgender.

“The University of Wyoming volleyball team will not play its scheduled conference match at San Jose State University on Thursday, November 14,” a Friday statement from the athletics department said. “Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the game as a loss to Wyoming. The Cowgirls will play at Fresno State on Saturday, November 16 at 2 pm”

The statement does not indicate why the school is losing the right. However, after the University of Washington initially committed to play against St. Joseph’s in September, even after the Fleming controversy broke out, the school received immense backlash from lawmakers and members of the public. Some of Wyoming’s volleyball players were also opposed to the idea of playing SJSU, some of their social media posts indicate.

But on October 1st, University of Washington announced that he had decided to cancel his Oct. 5 team-up against SJSU, a radical change from his previous statement.

Utah State University, Southern Utah University and Boise State University also canceled games against the Spartans.

And although their school did not formally support them in the decision, the University of Nevada Reno players voted last month lose their Oct. 26 game against San Jose due to Fleming’s involvement. The women cited equity and safety concerns, making them the first team to specifically mention why they were canceling.

Following an email Friday night to the University of Wyoming, asking why the UW canceled a second San Jose game, the school spokesperson sent a copy of the athletics department’s original statement.

The lawsuit is ongoing

Fleming is a standout player on the SJSU team and is also at the center of another SJSU player’s lawsuit against the NCAA. Teammate Brooke Slusser sued the NCAA, claiming its policies allowing men to compete in women’s sports are unfair.

That lawsuit is ongoing.
