Cavalry FC faces Forge FC in the Canadian Premier League final in Calgary

Spruce Meadows will be packed Saturday for the Canadian Premier League championship final.

Calvary FC took the practice field for the last time on Friday, before the big game against Forge FC of Hamilton.

Forge FC has been Cavalry’s archenemy since the launch of the CPL in 2019.

As a four-time champion, Forge has captured more trophies than any other team in the league’s existence.

Cavalry FC, on the other hand, has never won the playoff title, despite reaching the final several times.

The club recognizes that Forge is a powerful opponent, but the players and their coach were confident Friday that they will end up lifting the North Star Cup on Saturday afternoon.

“They’re a very good team,” said coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “Listen, I think we’ll talk about their team for years to come, but now it’s up to us. “If you want to change a dynasty, someone has to stand in its way.”

“We’ve talked a lot as a team,” goalkeeper Marco Carducci said. “This year is different. There are so many things that are different. On the one hand, we are at home and that makes a big difference for us.”

“We’re excited to be in this moment and we’re ready to take advantage of it,” Cavalry midfielder Shamit Shome said. “And you know, I think we bet on ourselves to come in and put on a good performance.”

Doors open at Spruce Meadows at 10:30 a.m. with a concert by Canadian pop star Lu Kala at 11 a.m. on the Spruce Meadows Electric Stage.

Kickoff at ATCO Field is 1 p.m.

The game is sold out, but Fanfest tickets that give you access to the big-screen party are still available.
