The Beatles’ last song, restored with AI, nominated for a Grammy

The Beatles have been nominated for two Grammy Awards, almost 50 years after the band officially divided. Her latest song, called “Now and Then,” was restored last year with the help of AI and is now nominated for record of the year alongside artists like Beyoncé, Charlie XCX, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. He has also been nominated for best rock performance, where he competes against Green Day, Pearl Jam and The Black Keys.

However, “Now and Then” was never released, as the technology of the time could not separate John’s voice and piano for a clear sound. But in 2021, filmmaker Peter Jackson and his sound team were able to separate the instruments and vocals with machine learning technology, allowing Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to finally complete the song.

Although “Now and Then” was finished using machine learning, it is still within the limits of The Grammys’ rules around AI. The guidelines currently state that “only human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration, nomination, or winning a GRAMMY Award,” but work containing “elements” of AI material is “eligible in the applicable categories.”

It’s a little strange to see “Now and Then” competing with modern music like Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em,” but it’s been a long time coming. We’ll see how the Beatles do during the 2025 Grammy Awards, which will take place on Sunday, February 2.
