The changing face of Baltimore County government

TOWSON, Md.: Wanted. A top executive who will complete the last two years of Johnny Olszewski’s term once he heads to Congress… and nothing more.

“Well, the sentiment of the county council is that the next county executive be an interim or interim executive and not seek elected office in 2026,” said council president Izzy Patoka, “the council does not want to give an unfair situation “. advantage of the position to any particular individual.”

The council would ultimately vote on the interim county executive after a public hearing in December, but what if the temporary top executive ultimately decides he might want to keep the job?

“It’s a stipulation, but to me it’s a question of integrity,” Patoka said, “if you promise not to run and then change your mind, that’s a statement about your integrity.”

County voters also approved a charter amendment, which will expand the county council from seven members to nine.

60 percent of voters supported bringing in new councillors, but the district map that will be used to determine where they will come from is already drawing criticism.

“The idea that we wouldn’t follow the county statute, make up new rules and then put them up to a referendum and no one would even see the map and then the map would become law… that’s very problematic to me,” the councilman said. Julian Jones, Jr.
