What is ranked choice voting?

Ranked-choice voting allows voters to rank candidates based on their preference rather than just their first choice. Winners are usually determined through multiple rounds of vote counting.

For example, if there were six candidates on a ballot, ranked-choice voting would allow someone to rank any of those candidates by which one they prefer. For example, a voter might prefer. Typically, a voter would choose any of these six candidates and cast their sole vote for the candidate of their choice.

The winner is chosen round by round, meaning that in the absence of a majority, counting continues with voters’ second choices until one receives 50% or more of the votes. In the first round, candidates’ votes are counted based on who picked them second on their ballots. However, the candidate with the fewest votes in each round is eliminated until one candidate achieves a majority, combining first-choice votes with second-choice votes from other candidates. Breed and Lurie made it to the 14th round in voting. counting process, the last round of voting.
