Judge Tanya Chutkan stops Jack Smith’s Trump election interference case

donald trump The federal election interference case is being paused to determine next steps after he was elected president.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan approved Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith’s request, which is likely a first step toward ending the prosecution.

Smith called the situation an “unprecedented circumstance” and said more time was needed.

“The Government respectfully requests that the Court rescind the remaining deadlines in the pretrial calendar to allow the Government time to evaluate this unprecedented circumstance and determine the appropriate course forward consistent with Department of Justice policy,” Smith wrote in the presentation.

He said the court will receive a status report or decision on December 2.

“The Government has consulted with defense attorneys, who do not oppose this request,” the letter said.

The case centers on claims that Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election and block the transfer of power.

According NBC NewsSources said Justice Department officials see no reason to pursue the legal case or continue litigating in the final months before Trump takes office in January.
