Rafael delays; Dangerous waves on the beach this weekend

(WALA) – Welcome to the weekend! We’ve had a mix of clouds and sun so far on our Saturday, and partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected to continue for the rest of the day. Our rain chances remain low on Saturday, but will be slightly higher on Sunday ahead of an expected front.

In the Gulf of Mexico, we are tracking Tropical Storm Rafael, which is about to complete its cycle and begin heading south toward Mexico. It is expected to dissipate early next week.

TODAY:

High temperatures will reach the lower 80s and mid 80s under partly to mostly cloudy skies. Chances of rain will be very low, only about 20%.

Our average temperature today in Mobile is 72°, and the record is 83°. According to the current forecast, we would break this record.

In Pensacola, our average temperature is 74° and the record is 85°. We could get close to this, but our forecast at this time does not indicate that we will break the record.

Either way, it has been a very warm stretch for the Gulf Coast. It looks like our above average temperatures will continue not only today but also in the coming days.

Beach alert: There is a high risk of rip currents this weekend. A high surf warning has been issued until 6pm on Sunday.

SUNDAY:

High temperatures on Sunday will be around 80° as we see more clouds and some showers. Moisture moves into the area ahead of a front that will pass through early in the week. We have increased our rain chances to around 40 to 50% for Sunday, with some lingering showers possible overnight.

NEXT WEEK:

On Veterans Day, temperatures will remain warm and a small chance of rain is forecast. High temperatures will be around 80° and the chance of rain will be around 30%.

We will see drier conditions on Tuesday and for part of the day on Wednesday. A front will approach our area and pass before the end of the week. That means we’ll see slightly cooler temperatures for Friday and next weekend.
