Israeli soccer fans attacked: Amsterdam mayor condemns ‘hit and run’ attacks on Israeli soccer fans

Amsterdam resident says she protected Maccabi fansposted at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time

An Amsterdam resident says she protected six Maccabi Tel Aviv fans during last night’s violence.

Esther Voet, editor-in-chief of a Dutch Jewish weekly, lives in the city center. As he watched footage of the violence, he offered his home to frightened Israeli fanatics through an app used by Jews and Israelis.

Initially, he told Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11, the fans were too scared to leave his location, so a colleague took them to his house for safety.

“They had horrible stories. They were really, really, really scared,” he says. “So I told them, you know, this is a Jewish home, you’re safe here.”

He also says that throughout the night he heard several “explosions.”

“The police say it’s fireworks. I don’t know, but it sounded scary.”

Reflecting on the events, he says, “I never thought I would go through this,” adding that it felt like “a pogrom.”
