2 charged in connection with Arizona Mills Mall shooting in Tempe

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — A man and a teenager have been charged in connection with a high profile shooting That happened inside the food court at the Arizona Mills shopping center in Tempe earlier this year.

The Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed Thursday that Xavier Padilla, 17, and Gabriel Garcia, 19, were indicted by a grand jury in connection with the September shooting.

Both face multiple felony charges of aggravated assault and endangerment, as well as one count of disorderly conduct and unlawful discharge of a weapon, which are also classified as dangerous felonies.

While Padilla is being charged as an adult, he also faces an additional felony charge for being a minor and carrying a weapon.

Arizona’s Family first reported that the scare among mall visitors stemmed from a dispute between the shooters and the victims and that Padilla reportedly admitted to the shooting.

The trial is tentatively scheduled for March 2025, prosecutors said.

Padilla and García were among three people arrested at the end of last month. The third person, Marvin Hooks, 22, was charged with felony conspiracy in connection with the crime, but was not charged.
