Upper Darby School District warns of students receiving racist, derogatory texts – Delco Times

The Upper Darby School District is warning parents that a racist and derogatory text message has been sent to some of its high school students.

The district alerted Upper Darby Township police and provided the text message to the department.

In a letter to parents, principal Dr. Craig Parkinson said the school is taking the matter seriously and that “the post contains content that does not align with our school’s values of respect, inclusion and civil discourse. “We are taking this matter seriously and addressing it promptly as we have been in contact with our local police department.”

Officials believe the message came from outside the district and said other states are reporting their students also received this text message.

District staff seek to identify the source and extent of the publication’s circulation, provide support to any students who may have been negatively impacted, and reinforce responsible digital citizenship, the letter said.

Parkinson said the district does not tolerate racist and hateful behavior, and any student involved in promoting or disseminating text messages and/or social media will be disciplined in accordance with the character code.

He asked that if a child receives such a text message or social media post to contact school counselors for additional support.
