Geneva Democrats celebrate local turnout, look ahead to municipal elections

The Geneva City Democratic Committee is celebrating strong Democratic voter turnout in Geneva, noting a high level of resident turnout despite mixed results in the national elections. The committee thanked voters for turning out in large numbers and emphasized that the energy seen at its Castle Street election headquarters signals a promising foundation for next year’s City Council elections.

“We were encouraged by the steady influx of people who came to share their concerns and hopes,” the committee said, expressing optimism that voters will remain engaged as they work to elect new city council members and counter the policies of the new national administration.

The committee highlighted several notable results, including the statewide passage of Proposition 1, which amends the New York State Constitution to include equal rights and protect reproductive rights. The committee called this a critical victory, especially in light of what they described as “new threats” to these rights nationwide. They also congratulated US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on her re-election, a victory they consider reassuring for New Yorkers.

Geneva Democrats expressed pride in the local voter turnout of Democratic candidates in every election. They are awaiting the final results certified by the Electoral Board, which will provide a more complete picture of Geneva’s participation. Early indications from in-person Election Day results point to what the committee described as a “strong outpouring of support for the Democratic candidates.”

The committee expressed disappointment that candidates Dave Wagenhauser and Scott Comegys, who ran for local seats, were unable to unseat their incumbents. Both ran “fantastic campaigns,” the committee said, adding that they remain proud of the efforts of both candidates. The committee remains hopeful in a tight race for the State Supreme Court, where Democratic candidate Erin Skinner has a potential path to victory.

The national results drew a passionate response from the committee, which thanked Vice President Kamala Harris for inspiring her local supporters while lamenting the re-election of a president they consider “unfit” and a “threat to progress.” The committee vowed to keep organizing efforts in Geneva strong, saying they are determined to “move Geneva and New York forward.”

Looking ahead, the Geneva City Democratic Committee calls on local residents to remain involved in their efforts, encouraging their followers to connect with them on social media and join their work to support the values and candidates Democrats.
