Finger Lakes Counties See Spike in Animal Collisions During Fall Months

Fall brings an increase in vehicle collisions with deer and other animals throughout New York, and several counties in the Finger Lakes region are among the hardest hit. AAA data shows that October through December is the peak time for these accidents, with Monroe and Ontario counties recording some of the highest numbers statewide.

Monroe County recorded 1,517 animal-related accidents in 2023, ranking second in the state. Ontario County also recorded a high number, with 1,151 accidents. These counties join others in upstate New York where drivers are urged to remain alert, especially during dusk hours when wildlife is most active.

AAA recommends that drivers watch roadsides, maintain speed limits and avoid swerving to avoid more serious accidents if an animal appears.
