Dye and McNew win North Platte City Council election

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – North Platte City Councilwoman Donna Tryon was defeated by Rod Dye in the District 1 race during Tuesday’s general election.

Dye finished the race with 58 percent of the vote, to Tyron’s 43 percent.

Dye said he is grateful for the support he received, but admits he still has a lot to learn, including learning how the budget process works.

He also shared his vision for District 1.

“I hope to see the city grow and do things that make young people want to stay in North Platte,” Dye said. “We’ve had a lot of my friends’ kids leave town and not come back and we need to have things to bring the younger ones back, not only to get them good jobs but also things for themselves.”

In North Platte City Council District 4, Nick McNew ran against Aaron Edwards in hopes of replacing incumbent Councilman Mark Woods, who decided not to seek re-election.

McNew received 60 percent of the vote, while Edwards received 40 percent of those votes.

“North Platte is on the right path of growth and we need to continue on that path,” McNew said. “With growth, we will have to face many crossroads and many difficult decisions. “We are going to have a pretty diverse community and we are going to have to serve everyone in North Platte and not just a select few.”

Dye and McNew will be sworn in on December 3.
