In the 2024 elections, Kansas voters have four races for US Congress.

Topeka will have a new representative in Congress next year: Derek Schmidt.

Kansas has four seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and three races have incumbents running for re-election, all of whom won. But one race, the Second Congressional District, which includes Topeka, had no incumbent. None of the state’s U.S. senators are up for election this year.

Polls closed at 7 pm and unofficial election results are now available. But mail-in votes and provisional votes can be counted for a period after Election Day. The final statewide results will not be official until they are certified by the State Canvassing Board, which typically occurs at the end of the month.

2nd Congressional District: Derek Schmidt defeats Nancy Boyda

Shawnee County is the most populated area in Kansas. 2nd congressional districtwhich has a three-way race between Republican Derek Schmidt, Democrat Nancy Boyda and Libertarian John Hauer. Schmidt, of Independence, is a former attorney general and previously served as a state senator. Boyda, of Baldwin City, served one term in Congress two decades ago. Hauer is from Topeka.

The Associated Press called the races for Schmidt at 10:13 p.m.

Schmidt declared victory shortly before 10 p.m.

“Thank you to the voters of Kansas’s 2nd Congressional District who made our victory possible tonight!” Schmidt said in a statement. “Our great nation has serious problems and we need serious people to address them. As your Congressman, I will work hard every day to faithfully represent our citizens as we work together with our fellow Americans to solve them.

“As I said when announcing my candidacy, what is best for our district and for America will always be my constant guide. I will immediately begin preparing so that on day one, January 3, 2025, we can get right to work to secure our border, reduce the high cost of living, reduce regulatory burden, and address many other priorities that Kansans have told me are important to our great country! Thank you for this opportunity to serve and may God bless the States. Joined!

Boyda admitted defeat shortly before.

“Tonight I called Derek and offered him my concession on our race. I wished him well and expressed my hope that he would do his best to listen to all sides as he confronts the difficult issues that will challenge the next Congress,” Boyda said in a statement. “I wish him all the best as our next Representative.

“For the sake of our democracy, I can hope that the next Congress will get serious about governing and put aside the divisive posturing that has been separating us.”

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jake LaTurner, R-Kan., decided not to seek re-election in this district that represents Topeka and much of the eastern third of Kansas minus most of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The district has favored Republicans. LaTurner won by 16 percentage points in 2022.

1st Congressional District: Tracey Mann wins re-election

Republican U.S. Rep. Tracey Mann of Salina is the incumbent in this district that represents the western half of the state plus north-central Kansas, which extends east to Lawrence. He is being challenged by Democrat Paul Buskirk of Lawrence.

The district has favored Republicans. Mann won by 36 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press called the race for Mann at 9:41 p.m.

3rd Congressional District: Sharice Davids wins re-election

Democratic U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids of Roeland Park is the incumbent in this district that represents most of the Kansas City metropolitan area, including all of Johnson County, as well as some rural areas of nearby counties. She is being challenged by Republican Prasanth Reddy of Lenexa and Libertarian Steve Roberts of Overland Park.

The district has favored Democrats in recent elections. Davids won by 12 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press had not called the race until 10:00 p.m., Davids declared victory shortly after 10:00 p.m.

“This victory belongs to all of us. It reflects our commitment to look beyond our differences and focus on what unites us,” Davids said in a statement. “Together, we will continue to fight for the issues that matter most to Kansans, ensuring that all voices, from Kansas City to Kincaid, are heard in the halls of Congress.

“It is an honor to serve as your Representative and I am committed to delivering real results for our community, from reducing everyday costs to protecting reproductive freedoms. Thank you for your trust – our work continues!”

Reddy admitted defeat in a post on X at 10:16 p.m.

“I have lived the American dream and decided to run for Congress because we need leaders who will work every day to ensure the American dream for future generations.

“Over the last year, I have traveled throughout Kansas’ 3rd District, listened to what’s in people’s hearts, and spoken about real solutions. It has been the honor of my life, and while tonight’s outcome is not what we wanted , I am very grateful for everyone who joined us on this journey.

“I congratulate Sharice Davids on her victory. The values ​​we campaigned for remain and this is not the end of our fight.”

Fourth Congressional District: Ron Estes wins re-election

Republican U.S. Rep. Ron Estes of Wichita is the incumbent in this district, which represents Wichita and much of south-central Kansas. He is being challenged by Democrat Esau Freeman of Sedgwick.

The district has favored Republicans. Estes won by 26 percentage points in 2022.

The Associated Press called the race at 10:03 p.m.
