Abu Sayed’s brothers meet Professor Yunus

Two brothers of Abu Sayed, the first student killed during the July-August uprising, met senior advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Jamuna state guest residence in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The brothers brought “salam” and a message of good wishes from their parents, saying they were moved to tears when Professor Yunus spoke about the sacrifice of Abu Sayed and the other martyrs in his historic speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September.

“We are honored that you have highlighted your heroic role in the revolution and also visited us in our village in Rangpur just a day after becoming the Chief Advisor,” Ramzan Ali, Abu Sayed’s elder brother, told Professor Yunus .

The two brothers shared the podium with Professor Yunus when the Presidential Guard Regiment (PGR) gave the guard salute to the senior advisor.

“I can’t tell you how we felt when we stood on the podium with the senior advisor and the troops honored us with the guard salute,” said Abu Hossain, another brother of Abu Sayed.

During the meeting, they briefed the senior advisor about the Abu Sayed murder case, saying that they want justice and exemplary punishment for the people responsible for the murder.

The brothers said they will establish a foundation named after their slain brother. They said they wanted to build a “model mosque” and a medical college in their village in memory of their murdered brother, and asked two ministries for help in this regard.

“The foundation will work for the poor and the victims of the mass uprising in July and August,” Abu Hossain said.

Professor Yunus assured all possible support to Abu Sayed’s family. He said the interim government ordered the police to speed up the investigation into his murder and ensure justice.

“Bangladesh will never forget Shaheed Abu Sayed and what he has done to the nation. His sacrifice played an important role in the massive uprising against the dictatorship,” he said.

He promised to support the family and said his doors will always be open to them.

“I will always be with you,” he said, and asked the two brothers to convey their “salam” to their parents.

Professor Yunus visited Abu Sayed’s parents in Babonpur village in northern Rangpur district on August 9, just a day after taking over as chief advisor to the interim government.

He also offered prayers at the grave of Shaheed Abu Sayed, who was shot dead at point-blank range by police on July 16.
