WASPI hopes renewed as key support will ‘hold ministers to account’ | Personal finances | Finance

WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaigners are hoping for fresh support from a newly formed committee in Parliament as they continue their claims for compensation. The Work and Pensions Committee, formed under the new Labor Government, will be chaired by Debbie Abrahams.

The previous committee came out in favor of WASPI compensation when Ms Abrahams was also a member, and urged payment plans to be introduced. WASPI activists are urging the Government to compensate the generation of women born in the 1950s who were affected when the state pension the age of women increased from 60 to 65 years.

The affected women were not adequately informed of the change by the DWPmeaning many saw their retirement plans thrown into chaos.

WASPI campaign chair Angela Madden said the campaign team met with Ms Abrahams on October 21. Ms Madden said: “She is willing to continue the conversation with the department. “They will hold the minister to account.

“They will have a counting session scheduled for shortly, so it will be very interesting to know when that will be and to attend and see the result.”

Another senior minister supporting the WASPI cause in the new Government is Sir Stephen Timms, who also sat on the previous Work and Pensions Committee.

She previously said: “The debate over the impact of the DWP’s lack of communication on increases to women’s state pension age has gone on for too long and it is time for the Government to take action to resolve the issue.

“There is no perfect solution, but there appears to be broad support for a rules-based compensation system with some degree of flexibility for cases where women have experienced direct financial loss.”

The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman published a report in March recommending payments of between £1,000 and £2,950. But campaigners hope to get more, with some MPs who previously backed the cause asking for payments of £10,000 or more.

Madden also warned that many WASPI pensioners will struggle to survive this winter. She said: “Things are more expensive now because they’ve gone up all year, not just one or two months at the end. So with the winter fuel payment gone and the not-so-good rise in our state pensions, we’ll pretty much stay put.” “.

Eligibility for the Winter fuel paymentvalued at £200 or £300 this year, it recently changed to be only available to pensioners who also receive a means-tested benefit such as Pension Credit.
