Senator Chris Murphy and Republican challenger Matt Corey face off in the final debate before the election.

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Senator Chris Murphy will face off against his Republican rival, Matt Corey, in a key debate just days before next week’s election.

The two candidates will face off as Murphy seeks a third term in the US Senate, a position he has held since 2013.

Murphy, who defeated Corey in the 2018 election, emphasized his legislative accomplishments during a press conference, highlighting his role in facilitating the first significant gun legislation in thirty years.

He expressed pride in the relatively low rates of gun violence in Connecticut, stating, “There is a reason gun violence rates are lower here in Connecticut than almost any other state in the country. This is because we have a serious legislator who cares about ensuring that weapons only reach the hands of responsible citizens.”

Murphy also joined advocates in Waterbury to discuss ongoing efforts at gun safety reform Wednesday night.

Instead, Corey addressed issues affecting the Latino community and criticized the Democratic Party for its perceived neglect of Puerto Rican voters.

He said: “The bad joke here is the Democratic Party’s lack of attention to the Puerto Rican community. “They have ignored this community for decades, but suddenly decided to spark outrage before the election.”

The debate is scheduled for tonight at 7 pm and promises to be a critical moment for both candidates as they make their final presentations to voters before the election.
