Trump declared winner in Kentucky, Indiana

Former President Donald Trump won Kentucky and its eight electoral votes on Tuesday. The Associated Press called the race in Kentucky about an hour after polls in the state closed at 6 p.m.

Hyde Park polling station closed due to ‘suspicious package’

Police shut down a polling place in Hyde Park Tuesday night after poll workers discovered a suspicious backpack.

Voters at the Church of the Redeemer on Erie Avenue were told to leave the site shortly after 4 p.m. and go to Knox Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue, the closest polling location. Despite the disruption, election officials said all voters were able to cast their ballots.

About an hour later, firefighters said they took an X-ray of the backpack and determined it was not a bomb or a threat of any kind. However, election officials said the Church of the Redeemer polling place would not reopen.

Voters who would normally cast their ballots at Church of the Redeemer will be directed to the Knox Presbyterian location.

Election officials said they prepare for problems at polling places with contingency plans, such as moving voters to a new location. In this case, they said, voters who already had their ballots at Church of the Redeemer were able to complete them, while those waiting to cast their votes were sent to Knox Presbyterian.

A 100-year-old woman voted for FDR for the first time. “I’m worried about this country”

Alma Reckmer, 100, Wyoming, Ohio, first voted for Franklin D. Roosevelt. He has voted for both Democrats and Republicans. “I’m worried about this country.”

Alma Reckmer’s voting history spans World War II, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, difficult economic times, and a global pandemic.

But the 100-year-old Wyoming resident is now more concerned than ever about what she sees in this country.

“I care about this country,” Reckmer said Tuesday after casting his vote.

He did not discuss his vote or the politics of the day, but Reckmer expressed concern about whether Americans are taking their freedom and right to vote for granted. Political parties shouldn’t matter so much, he said. It is the character of the candidate that counts.

“I’ve never been a one-party person,” said Reckmer, who said he voted for Democrat Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940s and Republican Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s. “I vote for the person.”

Poll workers told police the man initially refused to verify his identity with his home address, which is necessary to receive the ballot. After he finally did, he became “disruptive” and yelled “let’s vote” in front of about 100 people at the polling place, police said.

The man scribbled outside the boxes on his ballot and tore it up. He tried to put the ballot into the voting machine, but a poll worker told him the machine would not accept it. He then left with his ballot and was chased by an election official.

Sheriff’s deputies said the man was “very intoxicated.” He was charged with disorderly conduct and theft/tampering of a ballot.

Disabled voters can vote curbside

Voters who have difficulty getting to the voting booths on Election Day due to disabilities or mobility issues have another option.

The voting booth can get closer to them.

In a virtual press release presented this morning by Ohio Voice, Jen Miller, executive director of Ohio League of Women Votersexplained how it works: Two poll workers, one from each major party, will approach voters’ vehicle with a ballot for them to fill out.

The voter can fill out the ballot in their vehicle or at the door of the voting location. The most effective way to request a curbside ballot is to bring someone to the polling place who can enter the building, or call a fellow voter who can relay the request to staff inside. More information about accessible voting on election day is available on the Ohio Secretary of State’s website.

Voters with disabilities can also receive assistance marking their ballot with the assurance that “no one assisting may tell a voter how to vote or reveal information about how that person voted,” according to the Secretary of State’s voting guide.

Visually impaired voter complains about lack of privacy

Warren County voter William Brandon, who identifies as visually impaired, complained that everyone could see his ballot because his polling place was not prepared to accommodate him.

When he voted early Friday, Brandon said, he had to fill out his ballot on a screen in a public lobby, so anyone passing by could see him voting.

“The display was on public display,” Brandon said. “I was literally a few feet from the line to get in.”

When he complained to election officials, Brandon said, they told him there was nothing they could do. “It’s not okay for people to lack privacy,” Brandon said.
