If the presidential election has provided any relief, it has been the rise of generative AI. Neither Kamala Harris nor Donald Trump have made much of the technology in their public messages and have not articulated particularly detailed AI platforms. Bots don’t appear to figure among the economy, immigration, abortion rights and other issues that can make or break campaigns.

But don’t be fooled. Americans are interested and concerned about the future of artificial intelligence. Polls consistently show that a majority of adults from both major parties support government regulation of AI, and demand for regulation may even be growing. Efforts are underway at the state and federal levels to curb misinformation, fraud, and privacy violations facilitated by AI, as well as to support private sector innovation. Widespread AI policy is on the horizon, and the next president could well steer its direction for years to come.
